OCTOBER 2007 will see the introduction of an additional piece of legislation under the European Landfill Directive, prohibiting industrial and commercial waste from going to landfill without prior treatment.
The most widely accepted methods will be recycling at source and energy from waste and it will be the responsibility of the producer to ensure waste is being pre-treated.
For several years, Grundon has been operating a range of dedicated recycling collection services in preparation for this legislation, investing heavily in building material recovery facilities.
Using a series of conveyors, over-belt magnets, separators and sorting stations, these large facilities (each costing in excess of £5m) are able to remove cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, steel and aluminium cans.
From 2008, much of the residue waste which is not recyclable can go through the new £160m Energy from Waste plant, which will generate approximately 38 megawatts of electrical power - enough for 38,000 homes.
