Sir - Because Julie Kennedy, the Secretary, Oxfordshire Family History Society, listens to rumours and back-door whispers, rather than wait for the consultation which will soon take place, she is entirely wrong to say that the reconfiguration of the Central Library "will substantially reduce available space for services" (Letters, April 20).

She has no facts to support her assertion.

The removal of various offices and some storage items in the current library will ensure that a similar space for general public access, including Oxfordshire Studies, will still be available in the new Central Library.

Although Oxfordshire Studies and our heritage have an important place, which is sincerely acknowledged, many others use the Central Library apart from those groups, and they have a justified priority for access to the services which it is intended will be even better provided than before. From what I have seen of the outline proposals for the new Westgate Library, there is no doubt that we have the chance to grasp a marvellous opportunity for the people of Oxfordshire. Once the consultations start, it is to be hoped that the doubters have the grace to eat their words.
