PUPILS at a village primary school are taking the healthy route to lessons as part of a green travel campaign.

Children in Great Rollright have joined forces with Oxfordshire County Council to organise a week of cycling, scooting, skateboarding, and roller-blading to the school gates.

The effort is part of National Bike-To-School Week (April 23-27).

The school has drawn up a travel plan that identities ways of replacing car travel with healthy walking, cycling, or other means.

Headteacher Anne Hewett said: "Apart from the benefits of reducing traffic levels in the rush hour, this is another dimension to the school's daily exercise regime.

"Every morning staff and pupils engage in five to ten minutes of aerobic exercises on the playground before going to classes.

"I am keen to establish the habit of physical exercise among primary school children so that they reap the life-long benefits of good health and fitness."

Judy Kelly, from the county council's travel plans team, said: "Congratulations are due to Great Rollright school for its hard work in this area.

"They are one of several schools working along these lines.

"Individual pupils benefit and so does the whole of Oxfordshire. The less traffic there is on our roads, particularly at traditionally congested times, the better it is for the environment."
