Two sportswomen who overcame great physical challenges to represent their country have been recognised for their achievements by their community.

Jill Edwards, who won international medals in swimming, table tennis and badminton after a heart transplant, and blind bowler Madge Morgan, who represented England in the para- lympics, are among the recipients of Carterton's first Exceptional Citizen's Awards.

The pair received the awards from Hugo Brunner, the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, at a town hall reception.

The awards were set up by Carterton Town Council to recognise local people who have distinguished themselves through their actions.

Awards, based on nominations from residents, were presented for exceptional acts; sporting success; active support for a charity or voluntary organisation, and contribution to public life.

Other recipients were former serviceman Fred Bradley, who holds the Military Medal, is an active supporter of the Carterton Branch of the Royal British Legion, and organised the town's poppy appeal; Graham Evans, who has helped the Carterton and district branch of Save the Children raise more than £1m under his leadership; and the Rev Roger Billings, team rector and area dean at St John the Evangelist Church, for his contribution to public life. He retires this month after 12 years in Carterton.

Mayor Phil Scott said: "The council knows there are people who have worked tirelessly for many years to make the town a better place for all who live in it. Such people do not expect any reward, but the council wanted to thank them in some way."

Mrs Edwards, 65, has won more than 70 gold, silver and bronze medals at the British, European and World Transplant Games, since having a heart transplant at Harefield Hospital 16 years ago.

She said: "It was lovely to get this award, and it's a fantastic medal. But I do think my donor and surgeon deserve it more than me."

Mrs Edwards, of Wychwood Road, is travelling to Thailand in August to compete in the World Transplant Games. She added: "I always try to keep myself fit to show what can be achieved after a transplant."
