Young football hopefuls got a taste of life at a groundbreaking academy being set up in Oxford.

Nearly 50 aspiring young players and coaches attended a special open day at Oxford United's stadium for the Oxford United Football Academy - a venture between the club and Peers School in Littlemore.

The academy, which will begin life this September with an intake of 25 students, offers young people professional football coaching alongside academic qualifications.

On Saturday, potential students and their parents were given a rundown of what life at the academy will entail, before applications and trials begins later this summer.

Simon Abercrombie, head of teaching and learning at Peers School, said he was delighted by the response to the open day and was pleased to see younger players, aged 13 and 14 years-old, already showing an interest.

Among hopefuls at the open day was Ajay Lloyd, 16, from Abingdon.

He said: "It looks really good. It seems really exciting."
