A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car near Witney in the 11th fatality on the county's roads this year.

The crash happened outside Hill Top Garden Centre, on the B4022 Witney Road at Ramsden, shortly after 5pm on Saturday.

The motorcyclist, a 59-year-old man from Witney, was declared dead at the scene. It was the fourth traffic death this month and the 11th so far this year in Oxfordshire.

Police spokesman Adam Fisher said: "Officers were called to the scene at shortly after 5pm following a collision between a Yamaha motorbike and a Renault Scenic.

"The motorcyclist is not expected to be identified until Tuesday."

Mr Fisher added that the male driver of the Renault was uninjured. No-one has been arrested for any motoring offences.

The road was closed while traffic accident investigators from Bicester examined the crash site.

John Prové, the owner of the garden centre, said yesterday that the accident had happened close to the entrance of the garden centre, in a dip at the bottom of a hill.

He has collected a 1,000-name petition from residents calling for new safety measures there.

Police are still investigating the cause of the motorcyclist's crash and Mr Prové, speaking about the site generally and not the man's death, said: "It's a dangerous stretch of road.

"People coming from Witney towards Charlbury don't get many opportunities to overtake, and then the road opens up.

"The speed limit is 60mph but we have asked the county council to consider lowering it to 30mph near both the entrance and the exit to the garden centre.

He added: "A few months ago, one of our van drivers was involved in an accident near our exit where there is also a dip in the road.

"There have been a number of accidents in the area in the past few years. In one of them, someone pulled out of Ramsden High Street and was involved a collision with a car and in another, a member of my staff was in a crash with a drink-driver further up the road.

"Some of these crashes date back several years but they do show this is a tricky stretch of road, and following this latest accident we will be reiterating our calls for the council to review road safety measures here."

Following each fatal accident on Oxfordshire's roads, the county council's road safety team liaises with police accident investigators to see if new road safety measures should be introduced.

In February, a woman driving on the B4022 between Witney and Charlbury was injured in a car crash near Charlbury, and had to be cut from her vehicle.

Last April, a man needed hospital treatment after crashing his car into a telegraph police on the B4022 at Finstock.
