PUPILS and staff at one of Oxford's leading independent schools, are celebrating after achieving the "exceptional" task of earning top marks during an inspection.

A recent visit from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) saw Magdalen College School, placed in the "outstanding" band in almost every category - a rare feat which few schools in the country have ever achieved.

The Cowley Place school, which has 670 pupils aged seven-18, was deemed to be providing an outstanding education in a number of areas, including pupils' learning and personal development, quality of teaching, leadership and links with parents and the community.

Master of the school Andrew Halls, who has worked as a school inspector for 10 years, said: "In more than 25 years of teaching, I don't think I have ever seen a report as warm as this one.

"I am delighted for the staff, the pupils and their parents, but most pleasing of all is the way the inspectors' report picks up so well on the Magdalen College School atmosphere - hard to define but right at the heart of the school's success."

The report assessed all aspects of school life, both within the classroom and beyond it, stating: "Pupils are very well aware of the outside world and the school makes great efforts to engage with individuals and groups beyond its gates.

"The school has created a culture of tolerance, respect and inclusivity wholly in keeping with the diverse background of the pupils. Difference is respected, consideration for others nurtured and spiritual development highly prized."
