A KIDLINGTON after-school club has been highly rated less than a year after being branded “inadequate” in an Ofsted report.

Magpies West, which runs a breakfast and after-school club for 32 pupils at West Kidlington Primary School, was given the rating in November after inspectors highlighted behavioural and registration problems.

The 2014 report, which Magpies West director Ian Jackson said did not reflect the club’s quality, added that staff were not given appropriate supervision and training, with hygiene practices not promoting a healthy lifestyle.

But a new Ofsted report, after an inspection at the club on April 30, noted improvements in “positive relationships” with children, activities and behaviour, resulting in it being graded ‘good’.

Mr Jackson said the 2014 report was due to “unfortunate” circumstances, when pupils at the club were kept inside because of a school event.

He added: “Ofsted did not see us at our best and I do not think it really reflected the quality – they were unfortunate circumstances and the parents knew it did not reflect the quality.

“But we have now trained all the staff in behaviour management and have been talking to the kids so they know the behaviour rules.”
