A DRIVER was lucky to escape without more serious injuries in a crash involving a lorry and a van.

There were major delays yesterday morning on the A34 around Abingdon following the crash shortly before 6.30am.

It happened on the northbound carriageway between the Marcham interchange and Abingdon North.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Lucy Billen said the road was closed while officers dealt with the crash before one lane was re-opened.

One of the vehicles was badly damaged and fuel was cleared from the road before the carriageway was reopened at about 10.15am.

She said the vehicles involved were a Scania lorry and a Mercedes Sprinter Van. The van driver was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital suffering facial injuries.

There were tailbacks on the A34 all the way to the Milton interchange.

There was also a two-vehicle collision involving a van at Lodge Hill in Oxford Road, near the Abingdon North turn, at about 7.20am, delaying traffic leaving Abingdon.

No one was hurt.
