REGARDING Hazel Dawe’s comments on setting up a cycle route through Florence Park, I would like to point out that the park is already used as a cycle route even though it has a bylaw set when the park was built which prohibits cycling and notices at the entrances which states this.
It’s not so much the cycling but the high speed the majority of cyclists use, weaving in and out of park users and expecting them to jump out of the way.
Then the norm is to carry on up Florence Park Road on the pavement up to Church Cowley Road, even though the road itself is wide with very little traffic. It’s come to the point where I cannot go out of my gate without leaning over to check if a cyclist is whizzing my way as I’ve had many a near miss!
With all the money being spent on cyclists’ safety, perhaps some could be put aside for pedestrian safety signs in the city, especially where the road cycle lanes are ignored in favour of the pavement.
My comments do not refer to dedicated cyclists but to those inconsiderate cyclists who have no respect for the effort that has gone into making Oxford a cycling haven.
