A SERIES of short films showing the inspirational story of a group who have had life-changing brain injuries is set to premiere in Oxford tonight.

The individual stories of Mary-Jane Allen, who developed cerebral palsy as a result of being starved of oxygen at birth, and Martin Black, who re-learnt to walk and talk when he was 14 after a diabetic coma, will be shown at the Ultimate Picture Palace in Cowley Road after a red carpet reception.

Oxford-based charity Silverlining, which specialises in helping those affected by serious brain injuries, have organised the event hosted by law firm Withy King.

Mr Black said: “It’s brilliant that my story is going to be shown. “Silverlining is an amazing group and it’s so nice to be able to give something back.

“I’m looking forward to everyone watching me, I’m a natural performer.”

The 37-year-old, who suffers with short-term memory loss and requires a support worker, raised £1,000 for the Surrey hospital where he recovered.

The Long Hanborough man walked 150 miles in eight months, in two to three-mile intervals and was joined by other members from charity Silverlining on the way. He also raised £250 for the Shifford Riding for the Disabled Association where he rides regularly.

He said: “I’ve always liked my walking and it was an incentive to go and do more.

“My last half-mile around Blenheim Palace with all the Silverliners was nice and so many people came to watch.

“The Shifford RDA don’t ask for any money so I wanted to give something back to them too.

He added: “I hope people watching my film are inspired to raise money for charity as well.”

Mr Black has also recorded a song called With Me, which will be played at the premiere.

Another of the films will cover a Silverlining Fashion Show held in Oxford earlier this year at which Mary-Jane Allen took her first steps in 10 years.

Ms Allen, 29, from Kennington, who also has a short film of her own to be shown tonight, had not walked in public since her college days, before she wowed the crowds in January.

Withy King partner Tracy Norris-Evans, trustee for both Martin and Mary-Jane said: “We commissioned the films to celebrate the incredible achievements of Mary-Jane and Martin, who are an inspiration to us all.

“We hope their courage and determination will inspire others who may have suffered similar setbacks in their lives.”
