A CHARITY fundraiser hopes to have broken the world record for distance travelled on a space hopper after completing a half marathon on the rubber balloon.

Witney resident Jenni Davies travelled 14 miles on the children’s toy in an impressive six hours and 40 minutes at the Adventure Plus centre in Clanfield, near Carterton, on Saturday.

It was the 36-year-old’s third attempt at setting a world record for a half marathon.

The Oxford Health worker said: “I’m really pleased, if a bit sore. It was a great atmosphere – I would say about 200 people came to cheer me on over the course of the day. That made all the difference.”

In her first attempt to set the world record in July last year, the space hopper burst around the six-mile mark.

Then in October last year, the distance she travelled fell just short of the 13.1 miles required of a half marathon.

She added: “This year I decided to do quite a bit more, because I was conscious that I was short of the distance last year.”

Miss Davies said the idea of completing a half marathon on a space hopper first came to her when she was trying to complete three half marathons by three different modes of transport last year.

She did off-road running and another half marathon on a children’s bicycle.

Miss Davies is hoping to raise £750 for charity, which will be split between Adventure Plus, a Christian outdoor centre for children in Clanfield, and the Warneford Hospital.

She intends for the money to go to a new sensory room for patients at the hospital’s Highfield Unit, which treats children aged 11 to 18 who have acute mental health conditions.

The world record for travelling the furthest distance on a space hopper is currently held by Scarborough resident Phoebe Asquith, who travelled 4.1 miles in 2013 for charity.

Miss Davies has now sent off information about her world record-breaking attempt to Guinness World Records, for the record to be verified.

She added: “It would be nice to have the world record, but the day was more about raising money for charity and hopefully I’ve reached my £750 target.”

She has also donated her five space hoppers to staff at Adventure Base, who are planning to use them to do “space hopper jousting.”
