RADIOHEAD rehear- sed there, Supergrass sang there and Foals wrote a whole album there.

Now this rehearsal studio has been brought back from the dead with an investment of tens of thousands of pounds.

Nestled in picturesque Cumnor farmland just outside Oxford, the studio formerly known as Coldroom was used by generations of Oxford’s rising stars.

In recent years the studio did not get the tender love and care it deserved. But now a man who has been rocking out there for 30 years has taken it over and overseen efforts to bring it back to life. Jamie Hyatt, singer and guitarist of The Family Machine and owner of Beard Museum promotions and record label, reopened the studio last Monday after nearly a year of building works and gave it a transparent new name – Glasshouse Studios.

The 43-year-old from East Oxford said: “When we started I said all I wanted was to have a place where you can hear yourself singing above the noise of the band, that’s comfortable and warm and you can have a nice cup of tea. I’ve been rehearsing here since I was a boy 25 years ago. I’ve loved the place and I’d like it to be really good again. It’s a great location to make music and get away from everything.”

The studio now has its first inside toilet, central heating and brand new PA systems, mixing desks, microphones, speakers and kitchen facilities.

Mr Hyatt was invited to run the studio by landlords John Gee and Sons, who own the farm. He worked closely with them on the refurbishment, adding: “It was nearly derelict when we took over. It has been completely gutted and turned into a modern studio.”

Glasshouse now has three rehearsal spaces all with new equipment and Mr Hyatt, who lives with wife Suzanna and their three-year-old son Harrison, said he wanted to tell all the musicians in Oxford to come and try it out.

He said: “Radiohead and Supergrass used to rehearse here, and Foals wrote their album Total Life Forever in here one hot summer.

“Hopefully we can discover some new talent and turn them into Oxford’s next superstars.”
