Sir - The jewel of All Souls College is undoubtedly the Codrington Library. It is named after Christopher Codrington who died in 1710 and bequeathed money and books worth a small fortune both then and now (£16,000 almost 300 years ago) for the foundation of the library.

He had made his money from highly profitable sugar plantations in Barbados, which depended entirely on slave labour.

In this commemorative year perhaps The Warden and Fellows of All Souls might consider establishing a permanent fund at Christ Church (Codrington's original college) for the education of successive Afro-Caribbean students.
