Residents living off Oxford's Botley Road will find out today if they have won their fight to stop a McDonald's restaurant supersizing its hours.

About 30 householders living near the restaurant have written to the Vale of White Horse District Council saying the burger chain's plan to stay open until 5am on Friday and Saturday would keep them awake.

The company believes the move will be popular with customers. Residents fear noise, vandalism and litter.

Vale councillors will consider the licensing application - the sole item on its agenda - today in the Guildhall, Abingdon.

Ag Mackeith, who lives directly behind the restaurant in Old Botley, said: "Our main concern really is partly that there will be an increase in crime and we also think it will attract all the night owls who stay in the middle of Oxford and of course will bring lorries off the A34, which is the last thing we want.

"I think it's quite good there is a place in Oxford you can go if you are under 18 but they have not been good neighbours, they promised they would be but actually they're not."

Old Botley resident John Howells, 50, is leading the residents campaign and leafleted 70 homes when the plans emerged.

He said: "As far as I am aware, the council has received about 30 letters of objection from residents and I hope councillors will take them into account when they are considering the proposals. I think staying open until 5am would be excessive.

"Old Botley still has quite an old-fashioned atmosphere and we would like to preserve that if we can. Having McDonald's open until 5am would be a bit uncivilised.

"Being a good neighbour is all about compromise and meeting people half way and McDonald's will not be doing that if they stay open until 5am.

"Councillors are aware of the strength of feeling there is over this issue and I hope they consider carefully all the points residents have made."

At present, the restaurant opens from 6.30am to 9pm, Monday to Thursday, and from 6.30pm to 11pm on Friday and Saturday. The application requests permission to extend opening until midnight from Monday to Thursday, and to 5am on Friday and Saturday.

The chain has a number of branches in the UK which open round-the-clock.

McDonald's spokesman Hayley Ralphs said the application was made because it would be popular with locals, shift workers and passing traffic.
