The funeral service of a 'popular and inspirational' Oxford teacher has been held.

Tributes to Dr David Brunton, who died aged 39 after falling from St Mary the Virgin Church, in Radcliffe Square, Oxford, on March 20, have continued to pour in - with former students of the Magdalen College School teacher even starting web pages in his memory.

Dr Brunton was the school's head of media and lived in Hinton Waldrist, near Wantage.

His funeral was held at Magdalen College Chapel on Thursday.

Speeches were made by his sister, Joan, wife Jenny, who is pregnant with their first child, friend Rohan Setna and Dr Jeremy Grundy, the school's former head of the sixth form.

Dozens of messages have been left to Dr Brunton on the websites of the Oxford Mail and our sister paper The Oxford Times.

A further 70 were posted on the internet site Facebook.

Former pupils paid tribute to his skills as an inspirational teacher.

Guy Cable said: "Dr Brunton was no ordinary teacher, he was THE teacher: kind, caring and funny and always there for a boy in need.

"I remember him not just as a teacher but as a friend, whenever I needed help or just someone to exchange casual banter with.

"Dr Brunton was always there and willing to talk.

"He was an outstanding teacher, lessons were always exciting and I always left them reluctantly, wishing that I could have spent another period listening to his vast general knowledge and smart quips."

George Chapman said: "Dr Brunton was more than just a teacher to so many.

"He was a wonderfully colourful character, admired by almost everyone who came in contact with him.

"The world was a better place with him in it and this tragedy is a true loss to us all."

Simon Cant said: "He was a superb teacher... an inspiration who enriched our lives so much."

Pip English said: "He was a brilliant and inspirational teacher.

"He always seemed to have something of the Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society - occasionally unorthodox, slightly rebellious even, but forever inspiring."

Will Hannam said: "I find it impossible to convey with words the hole that Dr Brunton will leave in our school.

"His zest for life and unique sense of humour will never be forgotten."

Kit Weaver said: "He was everything that pupils wanted in a teacher: warm, kind, funny and everybody loved his unusual methods of teaching and discipline.

"He was always there for anyone in need whether he knew them or not. Such a generous-hearted man will not be forgotten."
