Sir – Your columnist, Christopher Gray, was a little unfair on broadcaster Brian Matthew and his producer in his column of May 21 – inadvertently, I’m sure. Mr Gray asserted that Messrs Matthew and Swern allowed a record to be played which could have upset a grieving family had they heard it.
It is my understanding, however, that Mr Swern visits Brian Matthew at home and records several shows in advance. Mr Matthew is not as young nor as healthy as once he was, but in this way can continue to broadcast a radio programme enjoyed by Mr Gray and many others.
It is, therefore, entirely possible that this record could have been selected and the link introducing it recorded a number of weeks before the tragic accident to which Mr Gray refers.
