More than 1,000 local people suffer from multiple sclerosis. The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Milton Park was specifically founded to offer subsidised therapies to sufferers. The centre has only a fraction of its potential membership and is hoping to attract more members.

It provides a range of complementary therapies, including physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage, reflexology, shiatsu, chiropody, plus hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HDOT), as well as information on MS and support.

HDOT is a method of breathing pure oxygen at higher than atmospheric pressure. While this does not cure MS, symptoms such as visual disturbances, bladder control, balance, sensory perception and fatigue do improve for some people.

Although the centre charges for its treatment, the rates are a fraction of the cost of private practitioners. It aims to be affordable, with extra subsidies for people on benefits.

The centre offers a cheerful and supportive environment. Manager Sue Doran said: "There is a real family atmosphere here. Members not only receive therapies but just as importantly get the chance for a tea, biscuits and friendship. Our volunteers contribute to this relaxed atmosphere."

One of its members, Angela, said: "I was diagnosed with MS in late September but neither my family nor I knew much about the disease. We found invaluable information on the Internet and my husband found the Milton Park centre. Happily, I work close by, so I am able to pop around to use the facilities. I have hyperbaric oxygen each week, as well as physiotherapy and reflexology.

"The centre has made a big difference to my knowledge about MS, as it combines information, fellow sufferers and a friendly selection of volunteers. I find it incredibly useful to chat to people who know about MS."

The centre is entirely self-funding.

Sue said: "We struggle to raise enough money each year to keep the centre going and provide treatments at affordable rates. We also try to improve the facilities year on year. At the moment, we cannot open every day but, long term, we aim to offer more therapy sessions and possibly Saturday opening.

"2007 is the 25th anniversary of Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centres and extra fundraising events are planned. We hope people will help and support us with these events."

The diary dates are:

  • Sunday, May 13 - Abingdon Dragon Boat Race
  • Saturday, June 18 - Northmoor Trust, Little Wittenham, with two live bands and a pig roast
  • Saturday, July 7 - MS Snowdon Challenge
  • Saturday, November 10 - Didcot Civic Hall, evening of entertainment.

If you know anyone with MS who could benefit from the centre's services or if you would like to volunteer, contact Sue on 01235 832023.
