In these days of heavyweight wines of 15 per cent and more, many people are turning to lighter, crisper, less alcoholic wines. It isn't too long ago that we thought a Chateauneuf du Pape at 13.5 per cent was a heavy wine, but that is nothing compared to quite a few of the wines we drink now. Here's a selection of lighter styles that still deliver ripe fruit but don't blow your head off!

The Light Reds case costs £65 and contains four bottles each of:

Vina Canchal Tempranillo 2003, Ribera del Guadiana, Spain: The region of Ribera del Guadiana groups six sub-zones distributed between the region's two provinces: Badajoz to the south, and Cáceres to the north. Here, the Cave San Jose produce this soft and delicate Tempranillo, which has delightful flavours of ripe raspberries with wild strawberry undertones.

Domaine des Castans Cote du Rhone 2005, Rhone Valley, France: The southern Rhone Valley is the home of the Domaine des Castans, which produce this spicy, redcurrant-fruited wine - a blend of Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. Soft and fresh, this is a great partner for white meats and can even de enjoyed slightly chilled.

Cantina di Custoza Bardolino 2003, Veneto, Italy: Cantina di Custoza is a co-operative that was established in 1968 and is located to the south of Lake Garda. Their excellent Bardolino is made from the Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella grape varieties, which produce clean and refreshing flavours of black cherry.
