If proof were needed that all has not been well at Campsfield House at Kidlington, we have plenty of it today.

An inmate is missing, but it appears that no-one can tell us his name, when or how he escaped, what steps have been taken to trace him, and whether they have been successful.

Another example of the seemingly lax way in which the establishment is run is the bizarre tale of the inmate in need of dental treatment.

He was due to have treatment by a Kidlington dentist, little more than a mile from Campsfield.

Yet he was taken all the way to London and dropped off on the way back, because transport arrangements could not be changed.

You really couldn't make it up.

Meanwhile, a new official report has concluded that conditions at Campsfield are "less than ideal".

The Home Office should be looking closely not only at ways of improving the management of the centre, but whether Campsfield is a suitable place to hold detainees in the 21st century.
