THE Blenheim Triathlon might still be months away, but behind the scenes the organisers are already working hard to make sure it's an event to remember.

It will be the third year that the race, which involves swimming, cycling and running, will be held at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock. It is the second largest race of its kind in the UK.

Race director Nick Rusling met Blenheim Palace chief executive John Hoy at the grounds, together with Channel Four television producers.

The event was televised for the first time last year and the same deal is in place again for 2007.

Mr Rusling said: "A few of the team paid a visit to Blenheim to officially launch this year's event and start the preparations for the race.

"Together with Channel Four we have been checking out the course and having talks with the Palace to ensure everything goes smoothly."

This year, the race is due to take place on June 2 and 3. Entries are already up on last year with 3,300 competitors signed up. About 4,000 people are expected to enter.

Last year, about 3,000 people took part in the race and despite terrible weather more than 10,000 turned up to watch the competitors.

Entries are still being accepted for the race and there are several distances competitors can enter, including the sprint (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), the supersprint (400m swim, 10km bike, 3km run) and a relay event.

There will also be a men's and women's elite race and a varsity race.

Celebrities who have raced at Blenheim over the past two years include former Government spin doctor Alistair Campbell, Olympic gold medal-winning rower James Cracknell, millionaire hotelier Sir Rocco Forte and England rugby players Nick Beal and Jon Sleightholme.
