Didcot Power Station is a necessary evil, making electricity to ensure that brewers can continue to make my favourite bitter and keep the pub lights on, among other things. The downside is the millions of tons of waste and airborne pollutants, including sulphuric acid and other harmful chemicals, that are released into the atmosphere.

However, one of my moles has informed me that as from April, RWE npower, which owns the station, is to introduce a ban on the use of tobacco products on site, save for a couple of designated smoking areas.

This is extremely good news as this action should negate the filth going up the chimney and reduce global warming by 12 degrees, resulting in the Sahara Desert turning into virgin rainforest in 15 years.

Meanwhile, at Witney Motor Auctions, the smoky atmosphere at times, due to old vans belching out black diesel fumes, resembles that given out by the Queen Mary leaving Southampton on a wet November morning, and yes, you've guessed, a smoking ban will soon come into force on the premises.

Is there anyone out there who is compos mentis, or are the lunatics running the asylum?

Heaven help us all.
