SIXTEEN people a day have been caught using their mobile phones illegally in Thames Valley since new laws came into force.
Since February 27, police have had the powers to give out a £60 fine and three penalty points to any drivers caught on their mobile phones not using an approved hands-free system. Previously there was a £30 fine and no points.
In the Thames Valley area, offenders are given the chance to have their points waived by attending a Call Divert course which educates them on the dangers of talking on the telephone while driving.
Of the 463 drivers caught since the new laws came into effect, 186 have accepted the offer of the course.
