I read through your article (April 15) regarding banning heavy goods vehicles from the outside lanes of the A34, and had some thoughts about some of the remarks.

I think Paul Davies, business development manager for Bicester-based Clayton DA Transport, is a bit naive if he thinks that HGVs don’t have a major effect on A34 accidents.

One only has to look at the photographs of these accidents to notice at least one HGV is nearly always involved. This has to be because lorries tend to tail-gate, leaving little room to stop.

He also says that it will impact on delivery times. It’s this urgency to get somewhere that results in tail-gating.

Remember that it’s these heavy goods vehicles that cause most of the damage and injuries.

Councillor Roz Smith thinks firms should move more of their goods by rail. This is all very well, but the logistics of doing that suggest this is pretty unlikely, particularly when continental firms like to deliver door to door.

To transfer containers being shipped from abroad to rail is fine, but we will have to wait for the completion of electrification to see that realised.
