THE fire service is calling on aspiring youngsters in Kidlington to join their cadet unit.

The Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service cadet unit is appealing for new members aged between 12 and 17 to learn a range of safety skills.

The cadets, which started in 1993, in Witney, run at Witney, Watlington, Banbury, Slade Park, Bicester and Kidlington.

Cadets will take part in firefighting training, such as hose and branch techniques, science of fire, simulated breathing apparatus use, use of ladders for access and rescues, and fire ground pumping.

Home and community service officer from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service Simon Sumners[Cor] said: “In addition to skills and increased awareness, the fire cadets play an active role in the community.

“We encourage them to become more active members of their community by volunteering some of their time by giving out safety advice for residents.

“It makes them more rounded people and we also help them work towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award.”

Kidlington cadets meet every Monday, from 6.30-8.30pm, at Kidlington Fire Station, on Sterling Road.

Cadets will also learn first aid and other skills, risk awareness, fire and water safety and community safety.
