KNOTS & CROSSES: COLLECTOR'S EDITION
Ian Rankin (Orion, £10.95)
This collector's edition reproduces what was our first glimpse of the Scottish policeman with the puzzling name, written before Ian Rankin hit the bestseller lists.
Published to celebrate the dour detective's 20th anniversary, this edition contains an updated and expanded introduction.
What makes the book stand out is the previously unpublished original material and special end-papers featuring Ian's original handwritten notes. Knots & Crosses, a story of the brutal abduction and murder of young girls is, as the author admits, a "pretty nasty book", but it is a landmark crime novel, showing the genesis of one of the most compelling fictional detectives around.
As Rebus comes to the end of his career - Rankin says there will only be one more novel featuring his detective - it's a good time to remember how he first began cracking Edinburgh's worst crimes.
