A investigation has been launched after a woman was raped in Oxford city centre at about 2am yesterday.

Detectives said the 19-year-old was attacked in an alleyway between the Market Tavern and Boots, off Market Street. The area was still cordoned off yesterday afternoon.

Police said the woman was walking along Market Street when she stopped in the alley to light a cigarette because it was windy.

It is thought she was approached by a man who asked her for a light, but then attacked her.

The man is described as 5ft 10in, of stocky build, fairly strong and may have been wearing a beanie-style hat.

Det Insp Kev Elkins, of Oxford CID, said: "We want to speak to anyone who was in the Cornmarket Street, Market Street or Turl Street areas between 1.30am and 2.30am.

"We must stress this sort of attack is extremely rare in Oxford, but we advise lone women to take care, especially if they're out drinking. As usual, we urge women to stay with friends and avoid quiet streets."

Anyone who has information should call Mr Elkins on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
