Sir - Your article Cold look at global warming (Weekend, March 16) contains the statement: 'Sea levels rise because as ice melts into water it warms and expands in volume'. This is nonsense.
Ice and water at temperatures below 4C have a negative coefficient of thermal expansion, as ice melts into water and warms it contracts in volume (to as little as 90 per cent of its previous volume). Ice floats on water because it is less dense.
