Sir - For three nights last week The Broad was illuminated only by fire. It was as if we had suddenly returned to the 17th century. No cars, no street lights, just thousands of happy people of all ages enjoying an astonishing spectacle, live contemporary music and a unique bamboo spire.
I have never felt so proud that this was an arts event, initiated and produced by arts people in Oxford.
We owe them our thanks: especially Simon Chatterton for bringing over Carabosse the remarkable French company who work so creatively with fire, Jo Ross of Oxford Contemporary Music and the artist Ted Dewan. Congratulations as well to Oxford Inspires, Arts Council England and all who backed these three visionaries. What a great way to celebrate Oxfordshire 2007.
Something truly magical happened which will be remembered for many years to come. Oxford, always a city of innovation, showed once again how it can lead the way.
