COMPETITION in the coupé segment has become even hotter thanks to the launch of the Audi A5 at the Geneva Motor Show.

Combining the essential sharp styling and impressive driving experience of a coupe, the A5 will face its arch-rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz later this year.

The two-door shape is long and elegant, although at 4.6 metres long it fits neatly between the A4 and A6 saloons.

The shape is also inspired by the Nuvolari concept which appeared at Geneva four years ago. As well as offering good passenger space for four adults, the boot can swallow an impressive 16 cubic feet of cargo space. Of greater importance to keen drivers is the substantial changes to the suspension. The A5 uses a new five-link front suspension system, which not only means more accurate wheel control but also allows the axle to be moved further forward for better weight distribution.

The rack and pinion steering system has also been overhauled, and these changes should combine to create one of the best-handling Audis in recent years.

Under the bonnet, the A5 comes with a choice of diesel or petrol power.

The 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre TDI units are used elsewhere in the Audi range, but in this model offer increased outputs, with 187 horsepower and 237 horsepower respectively.

At launch the sole petrol option is the 4.2-litre FSI V8, available only in high performance S5 designation.

As well as offering impressive performance, the S5 adds sports suspension and brakes as well as subtle exterior enhancements.

Orders are being taken now, with first deliveries expected in July. Prices start at £30,175 for the 2.7 TDI, up to £40,025 for the S5.
