Abingdon outdoor swimming pool in Abbey Meadow will open again this summer.

Abingdon Town Council and the Vale of White Horse District Council have come up with the cash so Abbey Meadow pool can reopen on Saturday, May 26. Thanks to the hot summer last year, almost 13,000 people used the pool compared to 4,300 in 2004.

It was the second best attendance in the last 10 years. The pool was closed two years ago following spending cuts by the Vale council. But it reopened last year following public pressure.

Both councils will continue to contribute to the pool's running costs this year and Soll (Vale) Leisure will again manage the pool on the council's behalf. The pool's future will continue to be reviewed annually.

A decision on whether it opens again in 2008 will be made later this year.

Joyce Hutchinson, the district council's executive member for leisure, said: "We are very pleased to be able to reopen the pool again this year and hope to build on the success of last year when it was wonderful to see these facilities being so well used.

"The pool is clearly held in high regard by people locally, and the best way they can show their support for the pool is by continuing to use it."

Alison Rooke, town council leader, said: "I am delighted that the town council is able to continue, and indeed slightly increase, its support for this important facility for the people of Abingdon and the wider Vale district.

"I urge people to go along and support the pool, and to investigate what other interesting features the ancient town of Abingdon has to offer."

The pool will be open daily until September 2 - from 10am to 1.30pm and from 2.30-6pm.
