On Sunday, I tried to take my daughter to a birthday party arranged at the Vue Cinema complex in Cowley, Oxford.

Unfortunately, she was late for the party and the showing of the film, due to the simple fact that I was unable to park the car, despite arriving in good time.

This was because the car boot sale held every week at the Kassam Stadium holds priority parking over all the other amenities there.

Not only were all the car parks full, but also cars were parked within aisles, making it impossible for cars to pass each other.

One such aisle was blocked completely by one vehicle, the driver of which was obviously oblivious to the fact that he was parking in the middle of a through lane.

The good news is that parking attendants were on hand to assist with parking, directing cars in the right direction and defusing irate situations.

The bad news is that the parking attendants employed didn't know left from right and preferred to stand in the middle of the road staring at the sky.

I have no objections to car boot sales.

But when they are held in close proximity of such family attractions, as is the case here, it seems only fair that some parking should be allocated to genuine customers that the car park was built for.
