Capital Shopping has cleared the final hurdle in its efforts to revamp Oxford's ageing Westgate Centre.

Legal agreements between the company and Oxford City Council were signed earlier this week.

The target date for completion is autumn, 2011. The extension, partial redevelopment and refurbishment of the 1970s city centre arcade will include: 750,000 sq ft of shopping A four-storey John Lewis department store A multi-storey car park with 1,335 spaces 127 new homes, 50 per cent of which will be "affordable"

A modernised central library.

Richard Cable, development director of Capital Shopping Centres, added: "We are now focused on the delivery of this exciting project and will be in a position to appoint a main contractor within the next few months.

"Enabling works - including further archaeological surveys - will be undertaken during the second half of this year and work on the main contract will start in 2008."
