Neighbours living next to a McDonald's restaurant are angry at plans to open until 5am.

Householders living near the restaurant, in Botley Road, Oxford, have written to the Vale of White Horse District Council saying it would be excessive.

The company said the move would be popular with customers, but residents fear noise, vandalism and litter.

McDonald's currently opens from 6.30am until 9pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 6.30am until 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

Van driver John Howells, 50, who lives in Old Botley and is leading the residents' campaign, said the company should stand by its pledge to be a good neighbour.

He added: "I have leafleted about 70 homes in the area to make them aware of this, and no-one I have spoken to is in favour.

"Staying open until 5am seems particularly excessive. This is a good area where crime figures are low, and we do not want this change. There will be more people hanging around and it could lead to an increase in petty crime.

"An all-night McDonald's would be even more of a magnet to boy racers, and their sound systems will keep people awake at night. There would be a dramatic impact on local residents if this application was granted, but a refusal would barely touch the McDonald's organisation."

The application requests permission to extend opening to midnight from Monday to Thursday, and to 5am on Friday and Saturday.

Chartered surveyor Robin Kemp, whose office is next to McDonald's, said: "An extension until 5am would concern us from a security point of view because there would be more people milling around."

Residents have until Tuesday to put forward their views.

The application will be discussed by Vale councillors at a licensing meeting at some point after March 28.

No other McDonald's restaurants in Oxfordshire stay open until 5am, but the chain has a number of branches in the UK which open round-the-clock.

McDonald's spokesman Hayley Ralphs said: "Based on our experience of other similar locations, we have every reason to believe that opening for longer at our Botley restaurant will be popular with our customers who are made up from local people, shift workers and passing traffic."
