AN EVENT to recruit people into the special constabulary to keep Henley a safe place is being held tomorrow.

There are three special constables who cover Henley, including Special Sgt Linda Greenwood, who said: "It is a great way to give back to the community. I have lived in Henley for 12 years and I think it's a great place to live. I want to help make sure it stays safe.

"Working as a special is interesting and no two days are the same. As well as dealing with the regatta and half marathon, we carry out patrols and deal with any disorder on the weekends. I also get involved in crime reduction initiatives. On my last shift I helped to deal with a serious collision in which someone sadly died.

"It has certainly helped to improve my skills and I have been able to bring a lot to the job such as my local knowledge of the area. I would recommend it as a way of really contributing to the community of Henley."

Special constables have the same powers and responsibilities while on duty as their regular colleagues and are subject to the same code of discipline.

Applicants undergo a rigorous selection process and, if selected, are required to attend an induction course.

They are required to undertake regular spells of duty - at least 18 hours a month - but every effort is made to fit these in with their other commitments. Uniform is provided free of charge, expenses are reimbursed and compensation is payable for loss of earnings.
