A PROPANE gas cylinder is thought to be the cause of an explosion at Oxford's Royal Mail sorting office.

Investigators from Oxford City Council's environmental health team have been working with firefighters on the investigation into the explosion at the depot in Alec Issigonis Way, on Thursday morning.

No one was hurt in the incident, but a number of witnesses were treated for shock.

Ian Wright, the council's public health team manager, said: "Firefighters have finished working at the site and our investigation is continuing."

Royal Mail spokesman Jane Beese added: "The environmental health department at the city council is conducting the investigation and we are awaiting the outcome of their inquiries.

"The damage to the room is not as bad as we first thought and the incident is being treated as a workplace accident. "
