This year's Blenheim Triathlon looks to set to be an event to remember with organisers already receiving more than 3,300 entries.

This time last year, about 2,000 people had signed up for the swimming, cycling and running competition, which is due to take place this year on Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3.

The event, at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, is now in its third year, and organisers are confident of reaching the 4,500 entries mark to make it a record-breaking year.

In 2006, about 2,900 people participated in the race to make it the second biggest event of its kind in the UK.

And to mark Oxfordshire's millennium celebrations, organisers would like to see 1,000 people from the county sign up. So far more than 500 already have.

Event director Nick Rusling said he was thrilled with the entry figures so far. He said Blenheim was part of a nationwide triathlon boom, with the sport being one of the UK's fastest growing.

He said: "The third Blenheim Triathlon promises to be bigger and better this year with 1,000 more entries than at the same stage last year.

"This comes as no surprise to us, with the number of people taking up triathlon booming in the UK.

"We are well on the way to seeing more than 4,000 newcomers and more experienced athletes swim, bike and run their way through the spectacular grounds of Blenheim Palace."

Channel Four is due to televise the race again, as it did last year.

Competitors can choose to race over a variety of distances including the supersprint (400m swim, 10km bike, 2.5km run), the sprint (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) and a relay event.

There will also be a men's and women's elite race where the country's top professional triathletes compete.
