An Oxford University student has died during a night out dancing with friends.

Elizabeth Vasey, a 26-year-old postgraduate student, collapsed suddenly at a Scottish country dance on Saturday night.

She was treated by a doctor, before being taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, but she failed to regain consciousness. Her parents and brother drove straight to the hospital as soon as they were informed that she had been taken ill. An inquest will be held into her death at a later date.

Ms Vasey was studying for a masters degree in biological sciences at Lady Margaret Hall.

A statement was sent out to all graduate students by Lady Margaret Hall principal Dr Frances Lannon, the tutor for graduates, the Rev Allan Doig, and the president of the postgraduate common room, Ruairidh Howells, expressing their sadness at Ms Vasey's death.

Postgraduate students at Lady Margaret Hall remembered Ms Vasey and prayed for her family at a chapel service on Sunday night.

Two other students have died in Oxford recently. Andrew Mason, 20, of Balliol College, was found dead in his room in early February. A week later, Ruskin College student Paul Duke, 25, was also found dead in his room.
