Microlight competitor Owain Johns would like to think the sky's the limit.

But as he prepares for this year's Microlight World Championships in the Czech Republic he knows a better machine could seal victory for him.

So the 32-year-old teacher from Horspath, Oxford - who has been flying since he was 13 and taking part in microlight competitions for the past four years - is appealing for spon- sorship.

He said: "I have already had some impressive results in the machine I have, but I know that with the right support and backing, I could get a medal at this year's World Championships.

"I would really like to aim for the top spot, but would need a far more advanced machine, which is expen- sive."

His achievements so far include fourth place at the European Championships last year, silver at the national championships in 2005 and 10th at the World Championships the same year.

He said: "These results are all good considering that in the machine I have, I'm immediately at a disadvantage when competing against others with better machines.

"I've shown my potential, narrowly missing out on the bronze medal at the European Championships last year in my current machine and hope I can attract some sponsorship to help me."

He added: "I've been flying since I was 13 when I used to work at an airfield as a part-time job. I got into microlights over the past three or four years, taking part in national and then international competitions. It's an exhilarating sport which demands a lot from competitors."

During competitions, participants are given a variety of tests over a number of days which measure their navigational skills including precision and accuracy.

Mr Johns said potential sponsors would have plenty of opportunities to gain publicity and exposure with space on the microlight's wing and pod, as well as his helmet and clothing, able to carry logos and brand names.

It would cost about £6,000 for the microlight.

The World Championships take place from August 23. Prior to this, Mr Johns will take part in a number of competitions around the UK.
