Sir - Dr Morgan's letter (March 2), in which he complained about the child unfriendly service he appears to think he and his family had received from staff in the Coffee Shop at the Oxfordshire Museum, does not square with the facts.

We have questioned the staff on duty and they are adamant that, when Dr Morgan's son-in-law came to the museum shop on Sunday, February 25, he was readily given hot water with which to warm his child's bottle. When the other members of the family arrived in the café, our staff were happy to accommodate them, even though they made no attempt to purchase any refreshments Later, the café began to fill up with customers and, soon, all the seats were full; indeed, some people had to be turned away because there were no vacant places.

On seeing that the baby had apparently finished feeding, a staff member politely enquired whether Dr Morgan's relatives were planning to take any refreshment because there were no vacant tables for other customers. At no time were the family asked to leave, or vacate the seats they were occupying. At all times, I am satisfied that the coffee shop staff were both helpful and pleasant.

The Oxfordshire Museum prides itself on its reputation for family-friendly status. The coffee shop sells products specifically geared to the needs of children and provides high chairs. Baby-changing facilities are readily available on site.

However, the café is what it says on the label. It is there to provide food and drink to its customers.

Perhaps Dr Morgan and his family would like to try sitting in a commercial café or restaurant without ordering any food, for a long time, occupying places needed by other customers and see if their reception is as polite and understanding as our staff were on this occasion.
