Car manufacturer BMW has pledged its support for the Cowley Road Carnival, in Oxford, for a second year.

The German firm, which owns the Mini plant in Cowley, offered an 11th hour boost to last year's event.

This year it will again be the principal sponsor and its support will help ensure the hugely popular parade returns.

The event, which is due to be held on Sunday, July 1, last year attracted more than 20,000 people.

It went ahead in 2006 as a food festival, entitled Eat the World, but without its popular and colourful parade.

BMW's cash injection means the community procession will make a welcome comeback in 2007 - and hopeful ensure even more people turn up.

Ian Nolan, of organisers East Oxford Action, said: "BMW Group Plant Oxford has been confirmed as lead sponsor for the second year, so we are absolutely delighted.

"Its funding and support will allow the return of the procession, which was missed by many last year."

Alexandra Brooks, from BMW, said: "The BMW Group was thrilled that last year's event was such a success and look forward to this year's carnival.

"With Cowley and East Oxford being on the doorstep of the plant we are keen to support the carnival. It is all part of fostering our relationship with the city and community. It is great to work with East Oxford Action and support the work they do and explore the fantastic diversity of East Oxford.

"It's all part of making Oxford a better place to be."

Last year's Eat the World festival brought in more than £700,000 to the East Oxford area.

Hundreds of volunteers helped make the event a success with more than 300 performers taking part.

Mr Nolan added: "We want to combine the best aspects of the events from the last two years.

"A number of ideas are emerging and we are keen for as many people to get involved as possible.

"We would like all of the diverse communities of East Oxford and the wider county to be represented.

"We are also actively seeking further funding and hope to announce other sponsors in due course."
