Oxford musician Thom Yorke narrowly missed out on an award at this year's Shockwaves NME Awards.

The Radiohead frontman had been nominated for Best Solo Artist.

It is a further disappointment for fans of the former Abingdon School pupil. He missed out on a Brit award last month, and a Mercury Music Prize in September for his highly acclaimed solo album The Eraser.

He was beaten then by Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys, who also took two awards at Thursday's ceremony for Best Album for Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, and Best Music DVD category for Scummy Man.

The NME Awards are one of the highlights of the rock calendar and are traditionally seen as a more accurate reflection of the contemporary music scene than the more corporate Brit awards. This year's award ceremony took place at London's Hammersmith Palais.

Mr Yorke was pipped to the post this time by South West London newcomer Jamie T.

Jamie is a regular visitor to Oxford and has been seen in action at The Zodiac in Cowley Road, Oxford Brookes University, and the former Corner Room, at The Plain, which has since closed.

Other victors at the awards included Scottish band The View, who took the Best Track award for Wasted Little DJs; and Klaxons who were presented with the Best New Band award.
