POLICE said this afternoon that the body found in the Oxford Canal in Banbury was a woman in her eighties.

Earlier, police said the body, found near Middleton Road and Mill Lock on Friday, was of a man.

The woman has not yet been formally identified and police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination, which should take place tomorrow.

Police said today that the death was still being treated as unexplained and detectives are appealing for anyone who may have seen the woman near the canal between 6.45am and 9am on Friday to come forward.

She is 5ft tall, with short grey hair and was wearing a tan waist-length coat and blue tartan trousers; she may have been walking between Mill Theatre and Bridge Street.
