THE WARTIME memories of Margaret Grayson sum up the wonder of Pooh Sticks.

For children separated from their parents during the Second World War, an opportunity to play outside and forget their cares would have been welcomed.

The 81-year-old was lucky enough to play the game in 100 Acre Wood itself – Ashdown Forest in East Sussex – and meet AA Milne.

For a new generation, the background of conflict might not be there, but the bringing together of people for a simple and decidedly quaint activity remains.

It is great the World Pooh Sticks Championships are staying in Oxfordshire and people will flock to Witney for the day.
