ARMOURERS from RAF Brize Norton held a 24-hour ‘spinathon’ last Monday in aid of Sobell House Hospice, Headington, Oxford.

From 8am the team of three, led by Corporal Dan Stubbins, used spinning bikes for a full day. They even ate on the bikes, getting off only for toilet breaks.

For Cpl Stubbins the day was also marked by his 30th birthday.

He said: “You could not have prepared for it. It was one of the hardest things that I’ve ever done.

“I can’t sit down now.”

The RAF team hope to raise £12,000 for the hospice through a series of challenges.

Last month they held a rowing event at Sainsbury’s, Witney, raising about £1,200.

Cpl Stubbins said: “After visiting the hospice late last year and meeting the lovely staff and seeing the amazing facilities they offer, it was clear that this is a worthwhile cause and we couldn’t wait to get started.”

Sobell House provides specialist palliative care and support to adult patients and their loved ones. Corporate fundraiser Kelly Houghton said: “We’ve had people doing marathons, and spinathons, for Sobell House but I don’t know if anyone has done it for 24 hours. It’s a real test of endurance.”

On Tuesday, March 31, the team will serve tea and coffee and iron clothes for customers at Kriss Kross hair salon, Carterton. To donate visit justgiving.com/24hourspinathon
