Sir – The county council has passed large cuts to the care of very disabled people. This will cause real suffering for people already struggling.

All the services at risk are essential: day centres; helping people get out of bed, washed, dressed and fed; care in Nursing Home; return from hospital when ready; respite care.

The Green Group didn’t get support for its proposal to ask if voters would pay £3 a month to protect the most vulnerable.

It now becomes an issue for the General Election. Conservatives and Liberal Democrats cut local government four years in a row. They and the Labour Party promise further cuts over the next parliament.

These three parties have, over the last ten years, slashed 40,000 staff from the tax collection agency, damaging its ability to collect tax from the richest individuals and corporations. About a hundred billion pounds a year are not collected.

We face a political and moral decision. Are we a society which supports the millions of people who work hard to give their disabled relatives and friends decent lives or are we too frightened to stand up to the rich and powerful?
