Sir – Is there no limit to the incompetence of the Conservatives who lead our county council? We have Ian Hudspeth making a screeching U-turn over the ‘redundancy’ of the chief executive, presumably after he discovered employment law.

Now we have the distressing, long-term, systemic failures on child sexual exploitation. Clearly there were errors by individual council staff and police officers, but children’s services (including safeguarding ) were overseen from 2005 by specific Conservative councillors.

Where was their curiosity, their relentless ness, their basic competence? David Cameron was rightly quick to condemn Rotherham councillors; one wonders why he seems less ready to speak out on a similar absence of accountability in his own backyard.
