LETTICE Bowlby probably did not imagine the amazing legacy her notebook would leave.

The volunteer Commandant with the Bicester Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) unit made notes of all the patients that passed through its doors during the First World War.

Her meticulous records, including photos, details of injuries and names, now present a fascinating account of the role the unit played during the conflict.

The album includes between 300 and 400 patient entries and is even more extraordinary because it seems no other book has the same level of detail.

And it is fantastic that the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum has managed to get the logbook on loan from the Red Cross as part of its Oxfordshire Remembers 1914 to 1918.

It is important that following the huge events locally and nationally to mark the start of the war, the county continues to remember The Fallen and the sacrifice they made during the four horrific years the conflict lasted.

The exhibition allows visitors to do just that, and allows us to empathise with real people from our military history.
