PLANS to expand Campsfield House have been pulled after the Government said it needed to review the welfare of detained immigrants across the country.

Yesterday Home Secretary Theresa May withdrew plans to expand theKidlington detention centre because of an ongoing independent review into immigration detention centres.

The Home Office said it needed to wait for results from the review, led by former prisons ombudsman Stephen Shaw, before it progressed with its plans to add 290 beds to the 276 there already.

The Home Office would not say why a decision to withdraw was not made earlier, but said it needed more time before any future decision is made.

In a statement the Home Office said: “The Home Office is also giving further consideration to the future requirements of the detention estate, including its capacity and location.”

The Home Office did not comment when asked what the capacity and location considerations were for Campsfield House.

Spokesman for the Campaign to Close Campsfield Bill MacKeith said: “I am relieved and getting ready for the next round.”
