YUMMY mummies sipping Prosecco and swish two bedroom terraces costing about £500,000 have made Jericho one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in the UK, locals have said.

A national newspaper survey said Jericho was one of the 30 most fashionable places in the UK.

According to the survey, the area is popular with students and academics.

Celebrity spotters should keep their eyes peeled for Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, and football commentator and former Arsenal defender Martin Keown.

Merlin Bateman, assistant manager of Branca restaurant in Walton Street, was not surprised Jericho has been listed in the survey.

The 31-year-old, who has been general manager for the past five years, said: “Jericho is very fashionable at the moment so this doesn’t surprise me at all.

“With all the boutiques nearby in Little Clarendon Street, the cocktail bars, it’s a very trendy place.

“We get a very young, trendy crowd coming in – lots of students with hangovers sipping Bloody Marys.

“We have got Prosecco on tap here and we get all sorts of different people dropping in – students and mums and dads.

“Tuesday is our mums and prams day and you could say they are yummy mummies, drinking their coffees while their babies do synchronised singing.

“Everyone knows the house prices are high around here but it’s a very popular area so people are prepared to pay.”

Mr Skene said celebrities regularly called in at the restaurant, including Thom Yorke and Martin Keown, and Mr Yorke’s partner Rachel Owen has displayed her artwork there. He added: “Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear also comes in and the actress Emma Watson used to come in when she was a student.”

Estate agent Richard Thomas, who works for Knight Frank in Oxford, said: “Homes in Jericho get snapped up as soon as they come on the market. A two-bedroom terrace with a kitchen extension could go for more than £550,000.

I sold one at £495,000 last year in Great Clarendon Street.

“These houses are very popular with young professionals who want to be in walking distance of the cafes and shops – they are prepared to pay a premium.”

Jericho and Osney Labour city councillor Susanna Pressel said the planned canalside development would make Jericho, which came 19th in The Times’ list, even more sought after.

Also listed were Great Tew, near Chipping Norton, where the Cornbury music festival is held, and Kingham, on the edge of the Cotswolds, where Blur bassist Alex James and chef Jamie Oliver host the Big Feastival music and food festival.

Kingham features the Kingham Plough, run by Emily Watkins.

A three-bedroom stone cottage in Kingham costs about £555,000, while five-bedroom houses cost from £1m.

The Falkland Arms in Great Tew sometimes welcomes Samantha Cameron, according to the survey, and homes there cost an average of £765,552.
